I have been interested in the work of the Institute of Functional Medicine for many years , combining as it does the best of both naturopathic and conventional medicine approaches to both promoting health and treating chronic illness. Training is equally available to qualifed medical doctors and other health professionals. In USA Functional Medicine is a fast growing health movement leading the way in the holistic treatment of many chronic diseases. A full rigorous training to become a fully qualified Functional Medicine Practitioner takes several years. Qualified practitioners are listed on the IFM website www.functionalmedicine.org. Other shorter training options are also available, with a more limited qualification.
The Institute of Functional Medicine teaches heath care professionals how to apply the principles of functional medicine (see below) in practice, through an intensive 5 day training course called Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice. I attended and completed the AFMCP-UK training in London in 2015.
“Functional Medicine emphasises a definable and teachable process of integrating multiple knowledge bases within a pragmatic intellectual maitrix that forcuses on functionality at many levels, rather than a single treatment for a single diagnosis. Functional medicine uses the patient’s story as a key tool for integrating diagnosis, signs and symptoms, and evidence of clinical imbalances into a comprehensive approach to improve both the patient’s environmental inputs and his or her physiological function.”
